The location makes little sense for a human watchpost.

It lacks wards against the undead, unlike the Wall, Bloodraven's cave, or (possibly) Winterfell.

And since the ringwall still stands, there's no reason to believe that other stone structures within would have crumbled or eroded away. Even ancient ruins of castles we see elsewhere still show stone outlines where the walls once stood, but the Fist displays no such markings. Wood might have fallen apart long ago, but the builders clearly were capable of working stone and willing to commit the time and materials necessary to fortify the place. There is no shelter from the cold, or place to store food or water, and, importantly, no indication that any structures which might have been used for these purposes ever stood here.

The builders don't seem to have made any provision to support life.

The ringfort at the summit poses an obstacle to men, both mounted and on foot, but the undead climb right over it.

The slopes on all but one side are too steep for humans to climb easily, but the attack on the Fist shows that the undead have little trouble with it, and the Others are said to have ice spiders for mounts which can scale vertical surfaces.
